Charm Meanings: the Elephant

Circa 1985 Elephant charmInterpretation of the lucky elephant charm comes from Eastern culture, Western fascination in exotic animals, and by observing it in nature. The symbolism of elephants deals primarily with strength, honor, stability, and patience.

From Hindu mythology, the elephant is found in the form of Ganesha who is the god of luck, fortune, protection and is a blessing upon all new projects. Ganesha in all his magnificently vibrant elephant glory, is intent on bulldozing obstacles on your behalf!ganesha

Elephant charms have been popular in Western cultures since the era of British Imperialism of the Indian subcontinent. European and American interpretation of the elephant charm stipulate that the trunk must turn up. Much like a horseshoe, it’s thought that a downward-facing trunk will let all the luck run out.

In nature, wildlife experts will tell you that, despite its size and power, the elephant’s temper (unless provoked) is pretty low-key, reminding us to be patient and level-headed. The elephant is considered a symbol of responsibility because it takes great care of its offspring as well as their elders. The elephant also has immense determination and loyalty – always standing up for others and always defending members of the group in its natural habitat.

  1. My grandmother collected elephants of all materials, and told me that it was good luck to display them in clusters of seven!–John

  2. I’ve been fascinated with elephant charms since I found one in my sisters room .I’ve always felt lucky when I wore that necklace, which i still have today. Ironically what you mentioned aboveabout the elephents being patient and overprotective of others describes me perfectly, an Aquarius. I think It would be interesting to see an article about all the zodiac signs and which charm correlates with each zodiac sign. Anyway, thanjd for a great article.
